Client Car Showcase: 1970 Ford Mustang 428 SCJ
Our most recent client photography shoot included two very unique 1970 Ford Mustangs, both with completely different engine and handling philosophies. This shoot was particularly special as both of these cars are owned by father, and he’s been itching to get them photographed for prints. I ended up doing a full 200+ photo shoot for both cars, capturing from a variety of different locations and angles to get the best possible lighting and look for each shot.
First up, was this absolutely stunning non-Mach 1 428 Super Cobra Jet. This particular spec is reportedly 1 of 7 ever made in this paint and trim combination. This car recently underwent a complete frame off restoration, and has been reconstructed to its original factory spec. Back in 1970, this car was considered to be a bit of sleeper on the street. From afar, this looked like any other mustang, with no Mach 1 badging or Boss 302 graphics to hint at any superior performance under the hood.
Under the hood, that was not the case. This particular 1970 Mustang is powered by a replacement, era correct 428 Cobra Jet Engine. This car came from the factory with the optional drag pack, which came with an oil cooler for high performance driving. 428’'s with this pack are referred to as “Super Cobra Jet’s”. Q codes were rated at 335Hp and 440lb ft. of torque from the factory. These cars where set up for drag racing and straight line speed.
The interior of this car is immaculate. Black interiors are the toughest to photograph, but this one came out great. The Hurst 4-speed shifter compliments this interior nicely, complete with a center console, functional tachometer, and am radio.
They do not make them like this any more…
The rear deck spoiler is a nice touch, giving it a slightly more aggressive street look. The factory correct Grabber Orange paint provides incredible contrast with this cars surroundings. In my opinion, this is one of the best colors Ford came out with at the time, and on vintage cars like this, it just looks amazing.
While we were not able to get this car on a lift, its very clear that this thing is immaculate underneath. The heavy duty Koni shocks truly make this area pop. Don’t worry, a 2 post lift is being installed at studio location sometime in the coming months.
Overall, this car is an excellent example of an era correct Q Code 428 Super Cobra Jet, and it was an absolute pleasure to give it a proper photo shoot. Stay tuned for its cousin, the 1970 Boss 302!
